Back after a break!

Hey all, it's been some time! 

Once again, haven't had the momentum to keep up the blog over the past few months for one reason or another.

However I've been playing some good stuff recently - completing some Final Fantasy titles I haven't picked up for a few years, so that's been fun!

I've got some fun looking stuff stashed away too, things I've been saving for a rainy day like Octopath Traveler and Breath of Fire III.

Also been picking up plenty of bargain Switch titles in the sales to try out.

So if I can get myself back into some sort of routine, fingers crossed I should have some more posts coming up soon 😊

Hollow Knight: Absolute Metroidvania joy (Switch)

I love a good Metroidvania game. There's something about the gradual unfolding and filling in of the map that feels so satisfying, coupled with the potential for all kinds of discoveries. Hollow Knight had intrigued me some time ago when I saw a little bit of gameplay. I seem to remember being captured by its style, but to be honest I hadn't realised then that it too fell into the Metroidvania genre - imagine my delight when I found that out! So far I'm about 15 hours through the game and I know I probably still have a LONG journey ahead of me, but I thought I'd share my thoughts so far! First things first, this game is gorgeous. It manages to simultaneously be dark and foreboding, yet cute and fun - a style I kept telling myself was 'beautifully bleak'. Defunct: High speed fun! (Switch)

I found Defunct on sale for £4 recently and having seen videos of its high speed gameplay, I just couldn't resist. The game, by studio Freshly Squeezed, is described as an "indie adventure game with a focus on flow, speed and an engaging world". You take control of a little wheeled robot who must catch up to the ship he falls out of at the start of the game. To do this, you have to utilize the many hills, boosts and slopes to pick up speed and really tear through a variety of areas. Defunct has a very nice momentum based system where our character can use a "gravitize" engine to maximize speed when going downhill. Applying this when travelling uphill will drain your speed however, so it's important to get your technique right if you don't want to be trundling through areas at a snail's pace.
