Momodora: Reverie Under The Moonlight (PS4)

I'm always pleased when I pick up a new Metroidvania game - particularly if it's on sale.

Despite the fact that most Metroidvanias conform to the same basic formula of side-scrolling action platformers where you gradually fill in the map, acquire items and abilities to reach more areas, take on plenty of enemies, usually do some grinding and tackle impressive bosses - it continues to appeal time after time.

For me, this is because it seems developers - for the most part - keep striving to put their own fresh stamp or twist on the genre, whether that be with some clever new game mechanic like Dandara's gravity defying method of travel, or a breathtakingly charming and unique world like Hollow Knight (which was fantastic for so many other reasons too).

Momodora: Reverie Under The Moonlight, developed by Bombservice and published by PLAYISM, does not exactly reinvent the wheel - but I'm very happy to report that it does stick very much with what makes a damn good wheel.

I picked it up on sale for PS4, at a price of about £4.

First impressions were very good - the game looks lovely, with nice animations and well designed locations to explore.

You play as a priestess named Kaho who seeks an audience with the Queen after a corruption has seen evil forces spreading across the land.

On the way to that audience, you'll need to travel many winding and branching pathways and upgrade your abilities in order to fully explore your surroundings.

Kaho fights with a leaf as a melee weapon, which works like a sword, as well as a bow with infinite arrows.

The controls are very nicely done, so combat unfolds at a good pace and your dodge roll allows for more tactical battles.

I have to say I really liked the bosses in Momodora - each of them were visually very nicely done and put up a good and challenging fight.

There's a decent variety of smaller enemies to keep you on your toes as you journey onward too.

Although Kaho starts with a double jump, there are a few additional abilities to unlock which allow for more exploration and enhanced movement - so there are some areas you may wish to revisit once new abilities become available.

There are also items to buy and find which you can equip to change or enhance some of your combat capabilities, as well as heal and increase your strength temporarily, meaning you can prepare Kaho with a setup that works for the situation.

Momodora is a short and sweet game. I got pretty hooked and marched my way through it in just under four hours - achieving a 99% map completion.

But there are collectibles I didn't manage to find and I had played on regular difficulty (a harder mode is available) so I will definitely be replaying it in the future.

All in all Momodora: Reverie Under The Moonlight was a joy to play and I'm hoping there's more Metroidvania goodness to come from Bombservice in the future!
