Hello! Stevo here. Welcome to the blog.

This is a space I have created to (mostly) rant and rave about games - the plan being to rant about the bad bits, rave about the good bits and chew over anything which falls in the middle.

I also like discussing broader subjects such as general game design and soundtracks, news and nostalgia.

On top of that I like movies, anime, cooking, bargain hunting and other bits and bobs so there will likely be some of things sprinkled in too.

If any of the above things interest you, welcome aboard - and please feel free to comment and share your thoughts.

It's a lot of fun to enthuse about great games and films, but it's even more so to have a good conversation about them.

Hollow Knight: Absolute Metroidvania joy (Switch)

I love a good Metroidvania game. There's something about the gradual unfolding and filling in of the map that feels so satisfying, coupled with the potential for all kinds of discoveries. Hollow Knight had intrigued me some time ago when I saw a little bit of gameplay. I seem to remember being captured by its style, but to be honest I hadn't realised then that it too fell into the Metroidvania genre - imagine my delight when I found that out! So far I'm about 15 hours through the game and I know I probably still have a LONG journey ahead of me, but I thought I'd share my thoughts so far! First things first, this game is gorgeous. It manages to simultaneously be dark and foreboding, yet cute and fun - a style I kept telling myself was 'beautifully bleak'. Momodora: Reverie Under The Moonlight (PS4)

I'm always pleased when I pick up a new Metroidvania game - particularly if it's on sale. Despite the fact that most Metroidvanias conform to the same basic formula of side-scrolling action platformers where you gradually fill in the map, acquire items and abilities to reach more areas, take on plenty of enemies, usually do some grinding and tackle impressive bosses - it continues to appeal time after time. For me, this is because it seems developers - for the most part - keep striving to put their own fresh stamp or twist on the genre, whether that be with some clever new game mechanic like Dandara's gravity defying method of travel, or a breathtakingly charming and unique world like Hollow Knight (which was fantastic for so many other reasons too).
