Membrane: wobbly building puzzle fun! (Switch)

Membrane is an odd little platform puzzle game on the Nintendo Switch by Perfect Hat developers Seth S. Scott and Jessica Kostelnick.

I picked it up in a sale for the bargain price of about 90p and was immediately intrigued by the trailer.

The premise of the game is that your character has the ability to fire blocks which stick together and form structures that you can use to walk on or influence your surroundings.

For example - need to get over a gap? No problem, let's build a bridge. Need to move that ball over there? Let's make a ramp and roll it where we need it to go - you get the idea.

What's nice about these structures is that they aren't exactly rigid and fixed - they bend and if strained too much they can even break, so some challenges need a bit of careful planning if you don't want your constructions to fall to pieces.

You can demolish what you build and reclaim your blocks, as your character does have a finite amount of them to play with.

Your goal in each level is to reach the exit door, but there's no specific set way to do this.
Membrane gives you more or less complete freedom to choose the method, which means you can be as creative as you like (as you can see in the trailer below).

I came up with all kinds of weird wobbly shapes to get me from A to B and I have to say it was a lot of fun seeing how they interacted with different objects and parts of the environments, some of which are hazardous and seem to be placed by the developers to keep things challenging.

As well as getting to the exit, you'll have the choice to find two collectibles in each stage - some of which take a good bit of head scratching and experimentation with your builds to reach safely.

I had absolutely no problem with the controls - everything works smoothly and there's also a function which allows you to aim your blocks for more precise or long distance building.

Membrane has a pleasant, fairly relaxed, soundtrack which doesn't distract you from the tasks at hand and nicely fits the style of the game.

Visually it has a nice and simple graphical style, making really cool uses of colors in some areas - which I really liked.

Length-wise, I got through Membrane in one sitting of a few hours but I admit I did not get all of the collectibles.

There are also unlockable bonus games, some of which I have yet to access, so I definitely still have things to do on Membrane.

Overall, this is a short and sweet puzzle plaftormer which invites you to approach the challenges in your own way, often with fun and unpredictable results due to the flexibility of the building mechanic.

It's definitely worth a play and for the bargain price I picked it up at, there's nothing to complain about here!
